Square Biz- School Daze

I have my first squares for Baby I's quilt and they came from no one other than her Mommy!  Yes, that would be me.  The oldest and most meaningful fabric item that I had to contribute (and was saving anyway for my daughter) was my prom dress.  Let's face it, Baby I will probably never wear it even if she is into vintage clothing.  It was a tad bit mermaidish, but in 1987 I was the shiznit!

I have you to know (while you are laughing) I was the ONLY one in Las Vegas with that dress.  I know this to be true because I made my mother go to every formal dress store, in the area, with me to make sure!  Good times.  We paid a cool $275 for that dress back in the day, so I was stylin' (I still have the tags also).  I know you appreciate the blue eye shadow.  Don't laugh or talk about me.  I've seen a few of your photos rockin' that same blue eye shadow.  The guy in the picture was my boyfriend Javier...ahhh, young love.  Oh, I digress...back to my dress in preparation for my pumpkin's quilt.  So, the dress before I cut it up for a square (I burned the dress tonight while ironing, but I just cut around that) this evening:

The dress after:
And Baby I's first square:

Can you tell, I'm so excited about her quilt?  I also found a couple of people in my neighborhood this weekend who can assemble the quilt.  I am supposed to meet with them (one day) to discuss commissioning one of them for this project.  That sounds expensive doesn't it?  I had to remind them I am going to be a single mom and they said "oh, don't worry we will work it out".  Oh, yea...uh, hu...okay.

I have to agree, you were the shiznit! I don't know where your comment went! But I sure do appreciate an additional one. Thanks!

Hey Tami,

That dress was hot! I had the ball gown with the big puffed short sleeves-navy taffeta. Don't worry, I'm not sending you a square of my prom gown. I'm going to find some kente cloth or something.

You were totally rockin' the mermaid dress!!!!

What a great idea to use a square of it for your quilt!

I think I got my dress out of a JCPenney catalog. Yours was much better!

Mine had a similar neckline - i was not allowed to wear strapless. not sure where the silly thing is though. and at least you had a date!!! i didn't

Robbin, as a matter of fact I was the best dressed mermaid! LOL

Barbara, I didn't say this was my prom! I didn't go to my prom. This was his prom! I opted out of mine. One was enough. I didn't even get a year book or class ring. I didn't like those kids enough to spend my hard earned money on all of that stuff. College was where the real fun began!

That's a cute picture (you could teach the "hoochie-gear-for-prom-dress" wearing youngins how to truly rock a prom dress gracefully and with taste)!

What is Mr. Javier up to now---and please don't say he is fat and bald.

When I saw Javier about 10 years ago...still in our 20s he was fat and had a whole bunch of kids! So add ten more years I'm sure he is still fat and probably bald! So sad...so much promise. LOL

Oh and those hoochie dresses are the worst aren't they? I wish Baby I would EVER part her lips to ask for something like that. How could their parents let them wear those dresses or pieces of dresses I often wonder. Where has the decency gone?

Girl you were fabulous! I actually like the dress. I really do. I guess that says something about me.

I love the idea that you got a square of fabric from it!

I'll be sending you my square next week.

Kristine, it says you have taste! :-)

I can't wait to see your square. Are you not doing the quilt? I thought you were at one point.

Well, I think it is an adorable photo, fins and all!

I liked the dress! I can hardly wait to see Baby I's quilt when it it all done! Baby I had better appreciate the sacrifice mommy made by cutting up the prom dress instead of saving it for Baby I's prom! If she has any taste, she will not be secretely happy not to have to wear it for her prom :)

I think there are two sets of parents who let their kids leave the house with the flimsy pieces of cloth that are today's prom dresses--parents too afraid of their kids or mothers who also wear "hoochie-gear" way past their prime!

I freakin' LOVE that prom dress! So, so sad you cut it up because that one really might have been a keeper!!! but alas, Baby I's quilt will be all the more special because of the sacrifice!

You certainly were smokin' under all those ruffles. I think your quilt is going to be brilliant.
