Singles Rules Change?

This morning I went on the Ethiopian Singles Yahoo Board and there were two disturbing emails. The first one said that one woman was told by her agency they could no longer work with her because they could only accept 5 singles a year for Ethiopia and they have fulfilled their quota! WHAT!!!!!!!!!!

The second email said how one woman's agency contacted her because their in-country representative was just told the government has made some changes that will affect singles but the rule has yet to be signed. However, if you are signed on with an agency you are safe. (I guess I better mail my paperwork next week, since I've paid for my home study).

So...there is a rule on the table. Will they sign it this year? Who knows but that is crazy! I want two children and in my heart I wish I could adopt two now. However, every time I look in my pocketbook I keep coming up with dust bunnies! Sighhhhhh! Maybe the rule will grandfather singles who have already adopted! Wishful thinking!

Gulp! I haven't heard any fresh rumblings about this up here in Canada so I'm hoping no news is good news. I also hope they will still allow us to adopt #2 if and when the time comes.

I hope that this isn't true. I emailed my agency to see what she thought, she hadn't heard anything but was going to talk to the contact in the morning over there. These rumors are giving me an ulcer:-(

I go back and forth with the logic (or lack thereof) of a lot of these changes. First of all, I think it should be easy for a family who wants a child to be able to provide a home for one. period. Yet granted that they have been screened, etc. I was shocked when I heard about all of China's changes and then I thought 'Damn.. they were pretty smart about that.' Here's why I think that. First of all, on a global scale, everyone knew that China was adopting out the most kids. So in some ways, it's a bit of a sore spot internationally considering that it's a rich country with millions and billions of people. Unlike Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, etc. where the economy and infrastructures are not strong enough to provide for everyone right now. What I think is smart about China is their decision 'hey... since our kids are being adopted out, meaning there's a demand, why not make it an even more win-win situation. Let's make it so our kids are guaranteed a college education, will be in a middle-upper class family with a healthy lifestyle, etc.' The Ukraine recently amended their IA laws to mirror this.

Mind you, I don't think singling out singles is wise.

I am so with you, but also trying hard to treat these rumors as what they are: RUMORS.

I would love two kids, but I just can't make myself nuts by stressing out now.

And I think it's complete bullshit that people are being told they would be grandfathered in by getting their applications in to an agency. If the Ethiopian government makes a change, why would they care how many folks had their paperwork into an agency in the U.S.? How would they even go about verifying that? If anyone would be grandfathered it, it would have to be people who have already been logged in by MOWA (the Ethiopian gov't agency) and not by some foreign adoption agency. Or no one will be grandfathered in.

Just my two cents, but I think the agencies are creating a lot of bad information by implying that they know what is going on.

**NO ONE** will know what is going on until the new rules (if any!) are published after court re-opens.

In the meantime, I think the best thing to do is to try not to stress about it. (I know! Easier said than done!)

Hang in there.
